Feeling great!!! 15 miles

Today was another good day. The weather was superb and I was running on all 8 cylinders. It is amazing on how much more enjoyable a run is when conditions and body are spot on.

There are two of the washes that I crossed that are running from the snow melt @ higher elevations. If I was hiking it would of been a good time to take a break and listen to the running water. Something about that sound – very peaceful. I also came across a contractor friend of mine who was on his mule named “Midnight.” What a good looking mule. He is currently training her for future hunting expeditions. There seemed to be more people on horseback today than on foot.

I might try and throw a 4 or 6 miler in tomorrow instead of taking the day off completely like I have been doing. My body is getting used to the additional miles. Stay tuned.

Feeling Good

Today was a good day. I changed my route somewhat today. The Saguaro National Park has quite an extensive trail network. I am truly blessed to live only 5 miles away. If my only option was asphalt it would be much harder. For those of you that have never experienced the desert in the winter, it is a must. Especially if you are in cold country. Today was in the 60’s with a slight breeze. Perfect conditions for a hard effort. I ran into a couple different people on horseback – even the horses had a smile on their face.

Reality is sinking in on the fact of my attempt to complete this 100 mile race (third attempt). Like I said before, the first attempt was when I was 40 years young and now I am 53 years old. When I look back, I could kick myself in the ass for not getting this over with many years ago. For right now I am extremely driven to make sure the training is on track as to insure a successful race. Still have 6 months to go. Staying motivated will be a challenge. Running 80-100 miles a week can take a toll on your body and mind. Realizing if I do not finish, it would be necessary to go back in 2010. NO WAY!!!!

Winter is back

Today winter has come back to the Old Pueblo !!! There is supposed to be up to 1 foot of snow @ the top of the mountains. Snow is critical to plant life out here. As the snow melts it actually percolates into the ground. When it rains most of the water just runs off. In a typical year Tucson gets less than 12 inches of rain a year. Every drop counts.

Just to let you know I logged 11 miles on Friday and 13 miles today (Monday Feb 9) even though this post says Feb 10. This weekend was a bust. For some odd reason my butt would not get off the couch yesterday. In previous posts I told you how important it is to start upping my weekly mileage. Still nursing some minor aches and pains. Can’t quite figure it out – Don’t know if I am doing too much too soon or just getting old.

As I was running today I recalled several times in my life when someone would ask me what I am running from. My normal response is PEOPLE. It is such an awesome feeling knowing when I am out on a run that no one is able to bother me. No cell phone to answer – no employees whining – no customers complaining. Am I being selfish ? Maybe – but the alone time is important because it seems it is just God and me. The more time I spend with Him the easier it is to love someone. The easier it is to let words go that would normally offend me. No temptation to flip the guy off who won’t get off my tail. Anxiety lessens. It’s a beautiful thing. Recently I passed the 81,000 mile mark running. I’ll bet you that no more than 2,000 miles at most were run with another person. When I was a road racer no one wanted to train as hard as me. And now no one wants to run as far as me. That’s ok, I prefer the solitude anyway. I have seen things that most people will never see. It’s kinda sad for me. The great outdoors is spectacular. Everyone should do some exploring.

I’ve also had people tell I am addicted to running. They are absolutely correct. For some it is cocaine for some it is alcohol for some it is golf. Maybe it’s the adrenaline – not sure. Sorry for rambling today. Hope ya all enjoyed it.

Picking up steam

Didn’t get a chance to blog yesterday, so here’s the scoop. Went out yesterday to Saguaro National Pak for a 13 mile run. If any of you exercise there are days when you feel like you are having the best day of your life. Well, yesterday was it. Finally it seemed like the effort was much easier. Lately to tell the truth has been really hard to get motivated. I’ll tell ya what – when everything is clicking you just don’t want to stop.

If there are more days like yesterday, this will be an enjoyable journey. Say your prayers for me, I need them. Pretty soon 100 mile weeks will be a normal week. That sounds crazy, doesn’t it ?

Until my body gets used to this higher mileage, I am still running every other day. I’ve been thinking maybe next week after a high mileage day I will run 4-6 miles the following day. Stay tunned.

Superbowl Sunday !!!

What a blow to The Arizona Cardinals. They played their hearts out. You can never count Roethlesberger out – what a competitor. If only………….

Back to my training for the 100 mile Leadville run. Thursday I logged another 11 miles and then today (Sunday) I logged 14 miles. Hope you wouldn’t notice that there were two days off. Kinda of a slacker huh ? It’s funny b-cause if you have read this blog since the beginning you know that I am not that excited about running a hundred miles without stopping. It is only because I have attempted this race twice and was not able to complete it. The only other race that was not completed the first attempt was The Phoenix marathon b-cause of blisters. It took two years to get back, but I finished it. Why in the world did I think a 100 miler would be cool ? And then to pick one of the toughest 100’s out there. Leadville has only something like a 42% finisher rate. That really sucks !!!

Eventually I will be running about 90 to 100 miles a week. You will see this is going to happen sooner than later. Will probably be running 15 miles a day for 5 days a week and then a 25 to 30 mile run on the 6th day with the 7th day a rest day. I also plan on running a few 50 mile races before Leadville. Like I said previously there are not any health issues what so ever. My knees, hips and ankles feel as good as they did when I was 20 years old. After logging over 80,000 miles running it does get harder to stay motivated. And being older my times have slowed somewhat. Not too bad though.
